The first thing you’ll want to do when you arrive in Manteo is enjoy the water. Head to the harbor where you can gaze out at the glittering cobalt water and board a charter with Captain Johnny to see bottlenose dolphins gleefully swimming through the Roanoke Sound. In the mood for something a little more hands-on? You can also schedule a shrimping and crabbing charter from the Shallowbag Bay marina. While you’re on the waterfront, visit the Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse, a unique in-shore lighthouse that sits at the end of a 40-yard pier and resembles a small house rather than a tall, spiraling structure.
